The Divine “Yes” (Reprise)

Jesus is a “Yes” to is the promise of God himself. We do not live in a world dominated by the negative, for all the negatives charges laid at the feet of God pale into nothing compared to the one great affirmative answer to those charges that God makes with utter clarity: Christ, and him crucified.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believe in him might not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Christ and Culture

A first century Christian by the name of Diognetus was thinking of this when he wrote:

Every country is their Fatherland,
but every Fatherland is a foreign country.

Christians are “in the world”—-”every country is our fatherland.” But Christian are not, “of the world”—and “every fatherland is a foreign country,” for, as St. Paul has written, “Our commonwealth is in heaven.” (Philippians 3:20)

Christians around the world pay tribute to the America flag, or the Canadian, or the French, or to one of hundreds of other flags, but, as Christians, we have a higher loyalty—–the banner of Christ!

How then will we live? There are at least three answers to that question.

Finding Hope Again

Life is a series of problems. The way that we handle these problems determines the quality and the hopefulness of the life that we lead. Dr. Scott Peck puts it like this. He says: “Life is hard. But as soon as we realize that life is hard, life ceases to be as hard, because we realize life is hard.”

Our Ministry of Stewardship (1 of 2)

According to Jesus, each and every one of us are stewards. 1) We are stewards of our wealth. 2 ) We are stewards of our natural abilities, experience and spiritual gifts. 3) We are stewards of our fellowship. 4) Of preeminent importance, we are stewards of the gospel itself. 5) Finally, We are stewards of our time.

The Sinner’s Prayer

It was William Jennings Bryan who said that we must be careful to whom we repent:

When we repent toward ourselves, we repent into the mouth of a raging lion. When we repent to others, we repent up a slippery slope. When we repent toward God, we repent to the author of all love and goodness.
