Here is an early addition of my August newsletter column, Across the Pastor’s Desk, for you web folks. It follows onto Sunday’s sermon.

This past Sunday we saw from Romans 8 that Christians are not exempt from suffering. The Apostle says that, “We know that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory that is to be revealed in us.” Glory? Yes, someday, for we are fellow heirs with Christ—“provided we suffer with him in order that we may be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:17-18) That does not exempt us from suffering today.

What is suffering? We find a good example of it in 2nd Corinthians 11:16-29, wherein St. Paul list the perils and dangers that he has passed through for the sake of Christ, and Christ’s body which is the church. (See Col. 124) In the Corinthians passage Paul list everything from beatings, and stoning, to betrayal, that is a biggie, to going hungry, or thirsty, or passing “many a sleepless night.” He even mentions the additional burden of the “anxiety” he feels for the churches—on a daily basis!

In March of 2009 Dr. Green accompanied a group from Appalachian State University on a trip to the Four Corners area of the American Southwest to study the Ancient Anasazi Civilization. He decided to make it “A Lenten Journey.” It was the most rewarding continuing education experience he ever had. Click here to download a PDF of his Journal, including many reflections.

A Short History of the Moravian Church was written in 1957 by the Right Rev. Herbert Spaugh. It was initially updated in 1996 by the Rev. Dr. Worth Green, and revised several times since. Posted to the web immediately after its revision, it has been viewed by as many as 1,200 people in a single month. It is a work in progress. Please contact Dr. Green with any corrections or suggestions for improvement.

According to Carl Jung, the dream is:

…a fragment of involuntary psychic activity, just conscious enough to be reproducible in the waking state. {Jung, Carl G., trans. R.F.C. Hull, Dreams. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1974, p. 68.}

The dream is an event in the unconscious mind that the conscious mind can, at times, just barely reproduce. The question remains: Is a dream a message from the unconscious mind directed to the conscious mind? Is it ever the case that a dream is from God? Read the rest of this entry »
