Senior Christmas Fellowship

Senior Friends enjoyed a potluck lunch and Christmas program on December 10 with Jon Boling, minister at Ardmore Moravian, and Jim Salzwedel, former organist at Home Moravian, providing beautiful Christmas music. Follow this link to see some seniors participating in the songs with instruments provided by Jon Boling: http://gallery.me.com/kehwindsor1/100201. Stories of Christmases past were shared.

Groceries are needed for fall and the holidays for our neighbors who are looking for work or have suffered illnesses in their families. Use the grocery list on the bulletin board in the commons area and bring items to the church office now and on December 2 before the Open Door Lunch.

New Philadelphia seniors will meet December 2 at 10 a.m. for a speaker and to collect and bag groceries for the needy. Afterwards, all are invited to join the Open Door Lunch at 11:45. December 10 will be the Christmas gathering. Watch this space, the bulletin board in the commons area and the bulletin for more detail.

Senior Friends Advisory Council met October 22 at Christ Moravian Church. David Guthrie, BEHM (Board of Evangelism and Home Missions) director, shared a service report from senior friends groups in the Southern Province. From about one-third of the groups who reported, more than 2500 hours of service to others was documented. Living Invitations: Sharing the Good News, an evangelism and outreach workshop sponsored by the Evangelism Committee of the BEHM, was held October 3 at Friedburg Moravian Church. Worth Green and David Guthrie were among the speakers for sessions offered. A new Sunday worship outreach served by Sam Gray, Brad Bennett and David Guthrie, “Come and Worship,” has drawn 18-40 people each week to Chelsee’s Coffee Shop on Trade St. in the arts district of Winston-Salem. One-half of the offerings collected have been shared with missions in the community including Seeds of Hope for Errol, an effort to help a local child with many medical problems.

Senior Friends Retreat at Laurel Ridge will be April 26-28, 2010 with the Rev. Jon Bolling (Ardmore Moravian) as retreat leader. More information will follow about registering or call Laurel Ridge at 336-359-2951 or 888-831-5922.

Thanks to senior friends who brought enough groceries to fill twelve bags at the August Open Door Lunch. We will continue to bring groceries for the needy from the list on the Senior bulletin board in the commons area, and we will pack them at the September 10 meeting at 10 a.m. in the Banquet Room.

Also at the September 10 meeting, Laura Rapp, RN, MSN, Program Director of the Congregational Nurse and Health Ministry, will share information about the congregational nursing program. Congregational nursing is a practice that combines professional nursing and health ministry seeking to help people achieve wellness by connecting spiritual and physical health, through education, through referrals to community resources and services and by coordination of volunteers and support groups to support health ministry needs of a congregation. After the presentation, lunch will be served, and groceries will be packed.

The Fall Senior Friends rally will be held October 13 at noon at Advent Moravian Church. Tickets must be purchased in advance; they are $9 and are available in the church office. Each person attending is asked to bring nonperishable food items for Sunnyside Ministry.

Anyone interested in planning a fall trip to the Billy Graham museum near Charlotte is asked to call Mattie Taylor at 765-0382 with times you are interested in traveling for the day trip.

All New Philadelphia members, newly retired or retired for a while and rejunvenated, are invited to these senior events. Bring a friend and join the fun, fellowship and service.

Many of you know Sister Ann Corbett through the aerobics classes she has conducted here at New Philadelphia for our younger women. They have been going on c. seven years! Recently, several of us had a chance to talk to Ann about a senior’s exercise class. We have not worked out any details regarding time, location, or frequency. We would like to know how many people might be interested.

Would you be interested? If you are, please email “pastor” at newphilly.org. Want to know more about seniors and exercise? Here is a video clip of one of Ann’s senior classes from WXII news.
