Senior Dates: Don’t Forget December Stories
Greetings from the Seniors - The seniors have had a busy time this beautiful fall. On September 5 we celebrated Older Adult Sunday with a special Litany in Church Service. Several of our members attended the Senior Fall Rally at Advent Moravian Church on October 14.
We are looking forward to two sessions by our pastors: November 20 John Rights will talk about “Memory.” John will accent what we remember, how we retain those memories, and the meaning that they have. Dave Marcus will speak on the subject of “Prayer” on December 18. This is a great opportunity to look at all the hows, whys, and why nots of prayer. Lunch afterward at K & W.
Our story telling sessions which started in April, ended with the last session November 13 with war stories from our veterans of WWII. Kay Windsor, our facilitator, has guided us to recall, through laughter and tears, the memories of our lives. You’ll hear stories of our early church, “the little church in the woods,” and the families who started it, personal stories, many “do you remember” stories and finally, touching stories from our veterans. Contributors of these veterans’ stories were Sidney Teague, Grover Chaney (who was wounded) Clyde Dula and Bill Newsom. We want to thank all who have contributed to these sessions, and a special thanks to Kay, who has shown great tolerance for some of our boistrous sessions. Thanks Kay!! You’ll be able to see and hear these stories at our Senior Potluck Luncheon, December 11, 10:00am in Fellowship Hall. We welcome everyone to come and be entertained as we share these stories with you.
Don’t forget to check the Senior Bulletin Board in the Commons Area for announcements. We welcome all suggestions and ideas to help make our Senior Fellowship more effective.
An important question to ask ourselves as we grow older, “Do you see yourself as a person of worth who is created in the image of God, and continue to find opportunities to serve God and the Church?” There’s always a place in the Senior Fellowship for you!
Thanksgiving Blessings to each home and family,
Clendon
New date for October Storytelling
The October storytelling session will be held Tuesday, October 21 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Banquet Room. This is a change from the original schedule.
Here are the remaining dates for Senior events in October, November and December.
October 14 - Se
September 11th Senior Meeting
The beautiful days of Fall will be here soon and we are making plans for our next Senior meeting, which will be September 11, at 10:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Sign up sheets will be available in the Sunday School Class rooms as well as the bulletin board. We are excited to have Archivist C. Daniel Crews of the Moravian Church, Southern Province as our speaker. He is a uniquely qualified scholar who lives in Winston-Salem, N. C. but has studied in Prague, and has served as an ordained minister of the Moravian Church. The Moravian Archives is the repository of the records of the Moravian Church, Southern Province. Our records date back to 1753 and the primary function is to serve the church in collecting, cataloging and safe keeping of its records. The Archives gives a detailed account of life in earlier times as well as family history of church members. Daniel has a new book entitled Faith, Hope, and Love: A History of the Moravian Church. This will be a most interesting meeting to learn more about our Moravian Church.
Our story telling sessions are continuing. Next sessions are October 9 and November 13. This has been an enriching experience as we have traveled down memory lane. If you need help to recall your stories, our teacher, Kay Windsor has prepared a questionnaire to jog your memory. Kay also urges us to bring photos and items that remind us of stories. For Veterans Day in November we would like to have veterans tell us some of their stories. This has proved to be a very rewarding experience, and hope each of you can come to the next session.
We are all invited to the Senior Friends Rally October 14, 12:00pm at Advent Moravian Church. Cost of tickets are $9.00 and payment must be made no later than September 30. Everyone is asked to bring non perishable food for Sunnyside. A love offering will be taken for the “Destination” music group. Tickets are available in the church office.
We are happy to have Dr. David Marcus as our Senior’s Pastor Advisor. Thanks Dr. David, Welcome aboard!- Clendon Newsom
Extra Sessions for Seniors
The pastoral staff is preparing three special lectures for our seniors this fall. These sessions are in addition to those already scheduled. All will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, and the pastor that does the presentation will accompany the group to K&W were we will all eat lunch—-everybody pays for their own!
- October 16: Dr Green will speak on the subject of “Mentoring: Children, Grandchildren & Strangers.” Seniors have so much to teach those with less experience in life, not just just our children and grandchildren, but often, the stranger who seeks our friendship and counsel. Of course, mentoring, like every form of learning is always a two way steet!”
- November 20: Mr. Rights will speak on the subject of “Memory.” John will accent what we remember, how we retain those memories, and the meaning that they have.
- December 18: Dr. Marcus will speak on the subject of “Prayer.” This is an great opportunity to look at all the hows, whys and why-nots of prayer.
Please make plans to join us.
Storytelling Sessions Continue in October, November
Seniors have been sharing life stories at meetings in April, May and July. We’ll continue to collect stories at the October 9 and November 13 meetings, then share some of them with the whole group on December 11. We especially invite veterans to share stories at the November meeting.
You can click on Story Telling Gallery to see some of the photos of those whose stories have been shared in small groups.
