Worth Green, Th.M., D.Min.

For the past several sessions we have been talking about the Birth of the New Testament. This morning I am going to do three things: 1) I am going to give you a quick review. Repetition is a great way to learn. 2) I am going to tell you what we know (and what we don’t know) about the death of three key apostles, and what their deaths meant to the church. And 3) I am going challenge you with an important stewardship.

A tip of the hat goes out to the Discipleship Class for the Trunk or Treat Party held last night at the church. This event grows in numbers year by year. Volunteers abounded, as did the children, all in a safe, concerned environment. Some Christians don’t recognize Halloween. Traditionally, it is the day before “All Saint’s Day,” and the tragedy is that we remember the former and forget the latter. This year, pause to remember all those believers who lived faithful lives and are now a part of the Church Triumphant, enjoying the more immediate Presence of God. There were quite a few goals and goblins at Trick or Treat, but real or imagined, we who believe in Jesus Christ have nothing to fear from them. As the Apostle writes in Romans 8:

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written,
“For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
